Editorial Policy

Our Commitment to Responsible Journalism

Uzbekistan Observer is committed to maintaining professional editorial standards built around accuracy, fairness, independence, transparency, and accountability.

This Editorial Policy outlines the principles that guide our reporting, analysis, commentary, and publication decisions.

1. Accuracy and Verification

Accuracy is fundamental to credible journalism.

We strive to evaluate information before publication, identify reliable sources, and distinguish verified facts from allegations, estimates, interpretations, and opinions.

Where relevant, we seek corroborating evidence, official documentation, direct statements, or other credible supporting material.

When information cannot be independently verified, we aim to communicate that limitation clearly rather than present uncertainty as established fact.

2. Editorial Independence

Editorial decisions should be based on journalistic relevance, public interest, and the quality of available evidence.

We seek to maintain editorial independence from political organisations, government institutions, commercial interests, and other external influences.

Commercial relationships, sponsorships, and advertising should not determine the conclusions of our news reporting.

Where sponsored or promotional material is published, it should be clearly identified so readers can distinguish it from independent editorial content.

3. Fairness and Balance

We are committed to treating individuals, organisations, and institutions fairly.

When reporting serious allegations or contested issues, we seek to represent relevant positions accurately and, where appropriate and practicable, provide the subjects of significant criticism an opportunity to respond.

Fairness does not require presenting unsupported claims as equally credible to well-established evidence.

Our responsibility is to reflect the available facts faithfully while acknowledging reasonable disagreements and relevant uncertainty.

4. Sources and Attribution

We recognise the importance of transparent sourcing.

Information obtained from external publications, research institutions, official statements, public records, and other sources should receive appropriate attribution.

We aim to identify the origins of significant claims and provide sufficient context for readers to assess their reliability.

Anonymous sources may be used when justified by the public interest and when disclosure could expose a source to genuine risk. Such information requires additional editorial care.

5. News, Analysis, and Opinion

Uzbekistan Observer publishes different forms of editorial content, including breaking news, explanatory reporting, analysis, investigations, and commentary.

We aim to maintain clear distinctions between factual reporting and opinion.

Analysis may include interpretation and context, but factual claims should remain supported by appropriate evidence.

Opinion and commentary represent the views expressed in the relevant article and should not automatically be interpreted as the publication’s institutional position.

6. Investigative Reporting and Public Accountability

Our Corruption Watch section examines matters involving public administration, government accountability, public procurement, state expenditure, and other subjects of public interest.

Investigative coverage requires particular attention to documentary evidence, sourcing, fairness, and the potential consequences of publication.

Allegations of misconduct are not findings of guilt.

We seek to distinguish between accusations, official investigations, legal proceedings, and established findings, while respecting the presumption of innocence.

7. Headlines and Presentation

Headlines, summaries, photographs, graphics, and other editorial elements should accurately represent the underlying content.

We seek to avoid misleading exaggeration, fabricated quotations, unnecessarily sensational framing, or the omission of context that materially changes a story’s meaning.

Visual materials should not be presented in ways that misrepresent events or individuals.

8. Privacy and Public Interest

We seek to balance the public’s right to information with individuals’ legitimate expectations of privacy.

Publishing private or sensitive information requires consideration of its relevance, accuracy, potential harm, and public-interest justification.

We exercise particular care when reporting on children, vulnerable individuals, victims, and matters involving personal safety.

9. Corrections and Updates

We recognise that errors can occur and that credible journalism requires accountability.

Material factual errors should be corrected when identified and verified.

Significant changes may be accompanied by an editorial note explaining the correction or update.

Further information about this process is provided in our Corrections Policy.

10. Multilingual Editorial Standards

Uzbekistan Observer serves audiences across different linguistic backgrounds.

Where content is published in multiple languages, we seek to preserve the original meaning, factual accuracy, and context.

We aim to correct material translation errors and avoid changes in wording that misrepresent quoted statements or documented facts.

11. Editorial Responsibility

We periodically review our editorial practices and welcome constructive feedback regarding the accuracy, fairness, and quality of our content.

Our goal is to maintain the trust of our readers through responsible, transparent, and accountable journalism.
