The Qora Mergan Affair (2020)
The anonymous “White Office” channel and the unanswered questions it left behind
Case overview
A 2020 anonymous Telegram campaign targeted Uzbekistan’s political elite. Its allegations remain unverified; the detention and later release of journalist Bobomurod Abdullaev were independently reported.
The Qora Mergan affair concerns an anonymous Uzbek-language publishing campaign that circulated allegations about senior officials and politically connected figures during summer 2020. The identity of the account operator has not been established publicly. The archive demonstrates what was published; it does not establish that the underlying allegations were true.
A separate, independently documented consequence was the 2020 detention and extradition of journalist Bobomurod Abdullaev, whom Uzbek authorities linked to the Qora Mergan pseudonym. Abdullaev denied the allegation, and the criminal investigation against him was later dropped. This dossier separates primary-source claims from contemporary independent reporting.
Questions still open
- Who operated Qora Mergan?
- What, if any, underlying documents independently corroborate the channel's claims?
- Why was Bobomurod Abdullaev suspected?
- Which institutions have responded on the public record?
