Tashkent’s city governor Shavkat Umurzakov signed a decree on 29 October ordering the creation of four new dedicated bus rapid transit corridors across the capital, adding 17.9 kilometres to the city’s expanding BRT network and committing an initial 6.5 billion soums from the Tashkent Development Fund for design work and preparatory costs.

The decree, titled “On the Organisation of Dedicated Bus Lanes in the City of Tashkent,” identifies four specific road sections where repair works and lane separation will be carried out. The longest stretch — 6.3 kilometres along Mirzo Ulugbek Avenue in the Mirzo-Ulugbek district — will be paired with a 2.8-kilometre segment on Parkent Street in the same district. In the city’s Shaykhantakhur district, the combined Karatosh and Kukcha Darvoza streets will receive a 4.2-kilometre corridor, while Mukimi Street, running through the Yakkasaray and Chilanzar districts, accounts for 4.6 kilometres.

Funding and Oversight

The joint-stock company Toshkent Invest kompaniyasi has been designated as the project’s client, responsible for selecting general design organisations, contractors and technical supervision engineers or consultant engineers in accordance with existing legislation. Financing will draw on commercial bank loans, the Tashkent city administration’s Road and Transport Infrastructure Development Fund, and the Tashkent City Development Fund — the same fund from which the 6.5 billion soums for initial design documentation has been earmarked.

Before road works begin, utility companies are required to complete any planned construction, repair or relocation of engineering networks along the affected corridors. Traffic restrictions may be imposed temporarily on sections under active construction.

Part of a Broader Push

The decree states that the dedicated lanes are intended to raise the priority of public transport on the capital’s streets and improve conditions for passengers. The four new corridors follow the recent launch of BRT construction on Yangi Sergeli Street in the Sergeli district and on Amir Temur Avenue in the Yunusabad district, signalling a sustained city-wide effort to shift road space toward bus transit ahead of further network expansion.
